Now I begin the third generation of my Generationlocke, with Pokémon Sapphire Version. To recap, this is a Nuzlocke of one game from each generation where I carry over the baby children of each game's surviving Hall of Fame team to the next game. I've done Yellow and Crystal so far, and three of my Yellow champions have grandchildren carrying over to this game (Shrew II and Dragon II weren't very useful in Johto, and Dinosaur II was tragically lost to the unavoidable Electrodes in the Team Rocket Hideout due to my hubris), joined by the children of three new team members from Crystal.

I move into my new home. My dad is the Petalburg Gym Leader now. But me and mom live in Littleroot Town. I visit Professor Birch's house and meet his son, Brendan. I run out to Route 101, where Professor Birch needs help with a wild Pokémon. There are three Poké Balls in a bag. My Trainer ID is 47738, so I have to pick the rightmost one, which contains Mudkip, and I rescue him from the Poochyena. We go back to his lab and I name my Mudkip Mudfish (I would have named her Mudskipper but then I won't have room for a numeral for her descendants). Then he suggests I go see his son on Route 103.

I take Route 101 to get to Olddale Town, where a Poké Mart worker gives me a free Potion. Mudfish reaches level 6 on the way. Then I go on Route 103 to find Brendan, and defeat him, which brings Mudfish to level 7. Back at the lab, Professor Birch gives me the Pokédex, and Brendan gives me some Poké Balls. My mom gives me Running Shoes.

Back in Olddale I can access the PC to receive my legacy eggs. I'll name them with Arabic numerals since there's not space for "MagicianIII". For my three Pokémon with two generations of Hall of Fame ancestors, I choose Carp 3's nature to be Adamant, Glutton 3's Ability to be Thick Fat, and Magician3's Nature to be Modest. I hatch them all, and leave Carp 3 in the PC for now.

On Route 101, I catch a Poochyena and name her Hyena. I return to Route 103 and catch Raccoon the Zigzagoon. I swap Raccoon in in place of Bat 2 for now, just for Pickup. On Route 102, I caught a Lotad that I named Lily Pad. In Petalburg City I saw my dad Norman and helped a kid named Wally catch a Ralts. Dad suggested I go to Rustboro and challenge the gym leader Roxanne. On Route 104, I caught a Wurmple that I named Worm. And then a Shroomish in Petalburg Woods! In Rustboro City, a man gives me HM01 Cut.

Roxanne isn't much of a challenge, although her Nosepass does bring Mudfish down to 7 HP with a critical. Afterwards, Mudfish evolves to Marshtomp and I see somebody from Devon Corp chasing a Team Aqua Grunt who stole some Goods.

Okay, Sunday came around, and I got the Return TM. Then Victory Road is just a short trip. I face Silver again, but defeat him without too much trouble. I do like his team. With Silver defeated, I reach the Indigo Plateau, heal up, and stock up on healing items. Before I take on the League, though, I duck back into Victory Road for a bit more leveling. Karen's Houndoom sets my level cap for entering the Elite Four at 47, and my team ranges from 41 to 46 when I start the grind here.

I head into the Elite Four with my team all at level 47. I teach MagicianII Shadow Ball and lead with her against Will. I also gave her a Bitter Berry, which cured the confusion from Will's first Xatu. I have to switch out when the second Xatu confuses her again. Unfortunately, Carp II misses several Thunders in a row, so I have to rely on Glutton II to take out most of the rest of Will's team.

For Koga, I teach Fire Punch to MagicianII and Judoka and give the former a PSNCureBerry and the latter a Quick Claw. Once again, I lead with MagicianII. Psychic takes out Ariados, Fire Punch takes out Forretress, Psychic takes out Venomoth, Crobat, and Muk. Each in one hit. MagicianII levels up to 49 mid battle. Turns out brute force and speed can overcome strategy.

Before Bruno, I restore MagicianII's Psychic PP with an Ether. She's my lead again for this match, and I give her a Berry for a bit of health restoration in case she doesn't 1HKO all of his team. Psychic 1HKOs the whole team, although Hitmontop did hit her with a Mach Punch that didn't do much damage.

Karen is going to be for Judoka, who I give a Blackbelt. Cross Chop takes Umbreon out. Vileplume paralyzes Machamp, which proves a big pain, but several Fire Punches and an Earthquake or two manage to eat through its healing anyway. A Vital Throw (despite paralysis) takes out Murkrow. I bring out Carp II to take on Houndoom, although a Max Potion means she takes a chunk of damage, so I swap in Alligator to finish Houndoom off. Judoka gains a level.

I have 4 Rare Candies, which I can use now to level up some of my team up to Lance's ace at 50. I use them on MagicianII and on Glutton II. MagicianII gets a PRZCureBerry and Ice Punch and Thunder Punch TMs. Another Ice Punch replaces Fire Punch for Judoka, who holds the Blackbelt. Carp II receives Strength and holds a Mystic Water. Glutton II and Bat also receive PRZCureBerries, while Alligator holds a NeverMeltIce. Carp II will be my lead against Lance. I'm lucky enough to land my first Thunder to take down his Gyarados before it can set up Rain Dance. I switch in MagicianII against a level 47 Dragonite and eat a Thunder. Ice Punch takes that and the other level 47 Dragonite out, as well as Aerodactyl, outspeeding all of them. Thunder Punch deals with Charizard, but it takes two hits, bringing MagicianII dangerously low. So now, I switch to Glutton II and am lucky enough to hit my first Blizzard, which 1HKOs the level 50 Dragonite, despite its dangerous Outrage. MagicianII levels up to 51.

Mary and Professor Oak show up to interview me, but Lance rescues me, taking me in to register me and my team in the Hall of Fame. Here's my team and their final moves with the Hall of Fame entries following:

  • Carp II (Gyarados), holding Mystic Water: Surf / Waterfall / Strength / Thunder.
  • Judoka (Machamp), holding Blackbelt: Cross Chop / Earthquake / Ice Punch / Vital Throw.
  • MagicianII (Alakazam), holding PRZCureBerry: Psychic / Recover / Thunder Punch / Ice Punch.
  • Glutton II (Snorlax), holding PRZCureBerry: Return / Blizzard / Thunder / Rest.
  • Alligator (Feraligatr), holding NeverMeltIce: Ice Punch / Strength / Whirlpool / Surf.
  • Bat (Crobat), holding PRZCureBerry: Wing Attack / Bite / Fly / Confuse Ray.

A Hall of Fame screen for a level 47 Gyarados named Carp II

A Hall of Fame screen for a level 48 Machamp named Judoka

A Hall of Fame screen for a level 51 Alakazam named MagicianII

A Hall of Fame screen for a level 50 Snorlax named Glutton II

A Hall of Fame screen for a level 47 Feraligatr named Alligator

A Hall of Fame screen for a level 47 Crobat named Bat

A Hall of Fame screen for a girl named Alice with ID number 54800, play time of 164 hours and 6 minutes. She has 178 Pokémon seen, and 44 Pokémon owned.

(As before, the play time is exaggerated by the use of the fast-forward functionality in MGBA.)

Now I need to make some eggs for the next segment of my Genlocke, which will I think be Sapphire (mostly choosing on the basis of having the copper Laties even though that's not until post-game I think).

To celebrate getting this far, I'm going to introduce a sort of reward system for lines that make it through multiple generations, as is sometimes done for Genlockes. Essentially, starting with a family's second offspring (when I get to, for example, Carp III), I get to apply some benefit to them as I continue. I might have started off with bonuses for 1-time Hall of Famers, but I didn't decide whether or not to do bonuses until now. I can only choose one bonus for each qualifying Pokémon each generation (although I can choose a bonus that only requires fewer generations of Hall of Fame ancestors than the Pokémon has, and breeding mechanics make it possible for some bonuses to be inherited). Here's the initial draft set of reward options (I reserve the option to revise them if this turns out to be silly in some way or I realize there is something I should have included but forgot):

  • 2+ Hall of Fame ancestors: Choose the Pokémon's Nature or Ability (not including hidden abilities).
  • 3+ Hall of Fame ancestors: Give the Pokémon an Egg Move.
  • 4+ Hall of Fame ancestors: Give the Pokémon its Hidden Ability or one perfect IV of my choice (or a 0 IV if I want that for some reason).
  • 5 Hall of Fame ancestors: Choose two benefits from the 2 to 4 Hall of Fame ancestor options.
  • 6 Hall of Fame ancestors: Choose one benefit from each of the 2, 3, and 4 Hall of Fame ancestor option sets, and one additional benefit from any of those three option sets.

Anyway, soon I'll start on Pokémon Sapphire Version! I'll include the notes on which Nature/Ability I chose for Carp 3, Glutton 3, and Magician 3. See you next time!

I venture into the Ice Path, where I catch a Swinub. After that, a few ice and boulder puzzles and I'm through to Blackthorn City! I catch a Donphan on Route 45 and settle in for some grinding. With my team at level 40, I take on Clair. Alligator can't quite one-shot her Dragonairs with Ice Punch, so I bring out Glutton II, who polishes them off, and with a little more effort, her Kingdra. But she's a sore loser and demands I take on some "dragon user challenge" before she'll give me my badge. The Dragon's Den isn't hard to deal with anyway.

I have to stop by New Bark Town to get to the Pokémon League anyway, so I stop by Professor Elm's lab and he gives me a Master Ball. On Route 26, I catch a Doduo and name it Emu. I reach the entrance to Victory Road. And then I travel back to Johto for some final preparations. Mostly, a lot of slots to get a couple of Thunder TMs.

I think I want Return for Glutton II, but unfortunately I can't get it until Sunday, so this will probably be the last update on my run until then! Victory Road and the Pokémon League on Sunday, then!

At this point, it's possible to do the next three gyms in any order, I think. Due to the level caps, it makes the most sense to do Chuck, then Pryce, then Jasmine (possibly doing the Team Rocket HQ before Chuck), so I think that's my plan: Team Rocket Hideout, then Chuck, then Pryce, then Jasmine.

So, it turns out that, due to my Dupes Clause, the only Pokémon that I can catch on the cave floor of Mt. Mortar are Machop (during the day) and Marill (at night). It would have been impermissible to try to intentionally make this situation happen, but since it happened organically, I end up guaranteed the rather improbable outcome of a copper Machop, which I name Judoka. And am faced with a quandary: Judoka would be incredible versus Karen, who is definitely the Elite Four member I have the least of a plan for, but I don't know who I'd want to drop for her. After a lot of thought, I think it's Oni, since Electric-type moves are only rarely necessary, so I can just rely on coverage moves from e.g. Carp II and MagicianII. Gonna have to catch her up on levels, since she's only level 14 now.

On Route 42, surfing, I run into a Goldeen and catch her. Name of Goldfish. The Gym in Mahogany Town is currently closed (not that I want to battle its leader yet anyway), so I head north onto Route 43, where I catch a Furret named Ferret. Oh, hm, given how high level the Red Gyarados is (30, the same level as Chuck's team), I go and swap Alligator temporarily for Oni so I don't have to level my main team quite that high yet.

I get Oni to level 30, when she evolves, and then go deal with the Red Gyarados and gain the Red Scale. Lance asks for my help investigating the strange radio signal from Mahogany that is forcing the Magikarp to evolve. The Rocket Hideout goes pretty simply, except... foolishly, I try to capture the first Electrode, and it selfdestructs after two failed ultra balls and takes Dinosaur II down. Mistakenly thinking I can get the Protect TM at the department store (wrong store), I go to Goldenrod and catch an Ariados on Route 37.

So, what I'm going to do is level Glutton II to 30, where Showdown's damage calculator thinks it should be safe even against a crit self-destruct. And also teach her Detect just in case Showdown is forgetting about the half-defense part. Actually, it turns out she can't learn Detect, but it worked out fine. Now I need to figure out how to adjust my team...

I think I'll use Bat in place of Dinosaur II. Both learn Fly and can deal with Grass types at the Elite Four. Now I head to Olivine City, where a sailor gives me HM04 Strength, and another man gives me a Good Rod.

On Route 40, I caught a Tentacool that I named Jellyfish. I manage to surf to Cianwood City. On the way, Bat evolves to Golbat. I fish up a Krabby there, but due to a crit I KO it. Judoka evolves into Machoke. At this point, I do a tradeback to another Silver save to evolve MagicianII and Judoka.

North of Cianwood, I saw Suicune. Eusine showed up and challenged me to a battle, but Carp II, Alligator, and MagicianII took care of him. Chuck is ultimately an easy battle for MagicianII, who takes out his Pokémon with one Psychic each. Afterwards, his wife gives me HM02 Fly. Bat hasn't evolved to Crobat yet, so I surf back to the mainland. The Mahogany Gym is next, but that's for next time.

While doing a bit of leveling before facing Pryce, Alligator evolved! At that point, I went ahead to take on Pryce. Judoka took out the seals, and Alligator Surfed over Piloswine and landed on victory.

After a trip up the Lighthouse in Olivine, and then to Cianwood and back to bring medicine to Jasmine's Amphy. I do some leveling, and Bat evolves! After a while, I get my team to level 35 and Judoka ends up defeating Jasmine by herself. When I leave the gym, Professor Elm calls about something weird going on on the radio.

I check out the radio tower in Goldenrod. It's full of Team Rocket! I fight my way up, and discover the director has been kidnapped and replaced with a Team Rocket Executive. Apparently the real one is in an underground warehouse. I run into Silver there, where he wants to take down Team Rocket, but first he challenges me, and loses again. After which, he runs off, seemingly to have a serious think about if he should be less of a jerk. I fight a bunch of Team Rocket and rescue the Director, who gives me the Card Key and asks me to stop the remainder of the Team Rocket members in the tower This is pretty straightforward, and the Director ends up giving me the Clear Bell afterwards.

Northward bound! I catch a Pidgey named Pigeon on Route 35. On Route 36, a girl tells me that when she sprinkled a little water on the strange "tree" blocking the route, it wiggled a little. She heads back to Goldenrod to ask her sister for her Squirtbottle. The sister thinks it's too dangerous, but since I have the Plain Badge, she lends it to me. The "tree" doesn't like it and attacks, so I defeat it and it skedaddles. I get a call from Picknicker Liz who found a Leaf Stone to give to me.

I make it to Ecruteak City. At the Pokémon Center, Bill, creator of the Pokémon Storage System, tells me about his Time Capsule for trading with the past. Somebody gives me an Itemfinder. I teach Dinosaur II the Dig TM I found in the National Park before venturing into the Burned Tower.

Somebody named Eusine tells me he came to the Burned Tower looking for a Pokémon called Suicune. In the tower, I catch a Koffing that I name Smog. Silver is here. After a somewhat challenging battle (he's getting better at battling I think!), I fall into a hole. There are three legendary Pokémon who wake up and then leave.

With my team at level 25, I take on Morty. Alligator takes out Gastly and one Haunter, then Morty brings out Gengar and I swap in Glutton II, who manages a Blizzard before being put to sleep. I switch to Oni, who finishes off Gengar. And then Carp II deals with the remaining Haunter.

Before I leave Ecruteak, I battle the Kimono Girls at the Dance Theater, who apparently you fight one at a time in this game, so it's much easier than in the remakes. And a man gives me HM03 Surf, which I teach to Carp II and Alligator.

Summary

New Pokémon: Pigeon (Pidgey), Smog (Koffing).

Important items: Squirtbottle, Itemfinder, TM30 Shadow Ball, HM02 Surf.

Important battles: Morty defeated, Fog Badge obtained. Kimono Girls defeated

Current Team: Alligator (Croconaw), Carp II (Gyarados), Dinosaur II (Charmeleon), Glutton II (Snorlax), MagicianII (Kadabra), Oni (Elekid).

Well, it's time to head toward Goldenrod. First, Ilex Forest, and HM01 Cut! I caught a Kakuna that I named Bee. I got a Farfetched to return to the Charcoal-maker and his apprentice, so they gave me the HM, which I taught to Alligator. I shuffled my party around, dropping Glutton II and Butterfly for now to have Shrew II for Dig and Carp II to begin training them up for Gyarados.

I make it through the forest and cross Route 34 without entering the wild grass; I'll come back for that later. I heal up in Goldenrod and swap out my team a bit to have Butterfly and an open spot to receive an egg from the Day-Care Man. It hatches into a copper Elekid and I don't even have to soft reset once (to get a copper one)! I name her Oni. This is pretty exciting, I think I might use her in my team! She seems neat. And I caught a Ditto that I named Blob on Route 34.

Goldenrod City's pretty cool. An Underground tunnel that trainers hang out in, a huge department store, a game corner, a radio tower. Lot of stuff going on. While there I think I figured out the team I'll be going with going forward: Alligator, Carp II, Dinosaur II, Glutton II, Magician II, and Oni. Dragon II just wouldn't get a chance to shine as Dragonite until after the Johto League's done, and Shrew II just isn't as essential without Blue's Jolteon to worry about. Carp II and Alligator each evolve while I'm training up for the gym.

After getting everybody to level 20, I face Whitney. I lead with Oni, who takes out Clefairy, but with enough damage that I feel I should switch to Glutton II for Miltank. Rollout is pretty dangerous so I even have to switch to Alligator to finish her off. Whitney starts crying after I defeat her :( but eventually she calms down and gives me the Plain Badge and the Attract TM.

Summary

New Pokémon: Bee (Kakuna), Oni (Elekid), Blob (Ditto).

Evolutions: Alligator (Croconaw), Carp II (Gyarados).

Important items: HM01 Cut, Headbutt TM, Attract TM.

Important battles: Defeated Whitney, obtained Plain Badge.

Current Team: Alligator (Croconaw), Carp II (Gyarados), Dinosaur II (Charmeleon), Glutton II (Snorlax), MagicianII (Kadabra), Oni (Elekid).

I hit a Bellsprout a little too hard on Route 36, and KO it, so no new Pokémon there for me, alas. I run around a bit and a Togepi hatches from the Egg. I name it Baby. I call the Professor and he wants me to bring it back to show it to him, so I do that and he gives me an Everstone. On my way back to Violet City, Butterfly evolves to Metapod.

That night I caught a Zubat and named her Bat, and swap her in for Glutton II for a bit. I reached Union Cave and caught a Wooper that I named Salamander. On the other end, I break up some Team Rocket grunts in the Slowpoke Well, and catch a Slowpoke of my own that I name Hermit.

At some point Butterfly evolved to Butterfree. While I trained before facing Bugsy in the Azalea Gym, DinosaurII evolved to Charmeleon, and MagicianII evolved into Kadabra. In the morning I catch a Spearow on Route 33 that I named Sparrow. I did swap Glutton II back into my team beforehand in place of Shrew II since Shrew will have a hard time at this gym and I don't need Dig right now.

I try leading with Butterfly for the battle against Bugsy, but unfortunately she can't really make a dent in Scyther, so I put it to sleep and bring in Dinosaur II, who handily dispatches it with a Flamethrower.

Afterwards, on my way out of town into the Ilex Forest, Silver shows up and demands I battle him. Butterfly takes care of his Gastly and Zubat, while I bring out my own Bat to deal with his Bayleaf. He sure calls me weak a lot for losing against me every time we meet.

Summary

New Pokémon: Baby (Togepi), Bat (Zubat), Salamander (Wooper), Hermit (Slowpoke), Sparrow (Spearow).

Evolutions: Butterfly (Metapod → Butterfree), DinosaurII (Charmeleon), MagicianII (Kadabra).

Important items: Swift and Fury Cutter TMs.

Important battles: Defeated Bugsy, obtained the Hive Badge. Defeated Silver in Azalea Town.

Current Team: Alligator (Totodile), Bat (Zubat), Butterfly (Butterfree), Dinosaur II (Charmeleon), Glutton II (Snorlax), MagicianII (Kadabra).

I'm going to transition my PKMN Yellow Nuzlocke into a Genlocke, where I take the survivors of the League in each game on to a game from the next generation as eggs). So, Crystal's up next! The rules are changing slightly: I'm adding my usual "Girl's Club" rule back in and a randomized starter rule as well (not applicable to Yellow since there's not a choice of starter in that one).

rules for my Genlocke, Crystal section

  2. If a Pokémon is defeated in battle it may not be used for the rest of the game.
    1. Losing a battle is game over.

Amusingly, despite adding in the random starter rule, my trainer ID is 54800... so I get a free choice this time. Normally I'd pick Cyndaquil, but I do get Charmander as a legacy mon. Totodile is my next favorite Johto starter, although I will eventually get Carp's child to be Gyarados again. I think I'll do Totodile though. It took me like 6 or more times to get a copper Totodile.

I head through Cherrygrove City Professor Elm's request to get to Mr. Pokémon's House on Route 30. Mr. Pokémon gives me a Mystery Egg to bring to Professor Elm, while Professor Oak gives me a Pokédex! On my way back, some red-headed kid shows up and challenges me to a battle, that I win. While I'm going back and forth, my legacy Pokémon eggs start hatching! Back home, Elm advises me to go earn Gym Badges, and his assistant gives me some Poké Balls.

On Route 29, I meet a Hoothoot, but a stray critical KOs it. Oops. On Route 30 the next morning, I do catch a Caterpie that I name Butterfly. They might briefly replace Dragon II or somebody in my party, but not yet, since the level cap for Falkner is only 9 so I can't even get Butterfree yet. On Route 31, I catch a Ledyba that I name Ladybug. I made it to Violet City to heal up and then dipped into Dark Cave, where I captured a Geodude that I named Rock. In Sprout Tower, I catch a Rattata named Rat.

Falkner was super easy with my legacy Pokémon, although Magician II didn't 1HKO Pidgeotto and would have been eliminated if Gust had been a critical. I'll have to be more careful with it for a while. Afterwards, Professor Elm called me and asked me to meet his assistant at the Pokémon Center. He gives me the Egg to hatch, so I put Dragon II in the box for now. Afterwards I go and finish off the Sprout Tower and receive HM05 Flash.

Next time I'll be on my way to Azalea Town! Thus far I'm mostly making use of my legacy Pokémon, but we'll see what happens as time goes on. I certainly plan to level up Butterfly for early-game catching purposes.

Summary

Legacy Pokémon: Carp II (Gyarados), DinosaurII (Charmander), Dragon II (Dratini), Glutton II (Snorlax), MagicianII (Abra), Shrew II (Sandshrew).

New Pokémon: Alligator (Totodile), Butterfly (Caterpie), Rock (Geodude), Rat (Rattata).

Important items: HM05 Flash, Egg.

Important battles: Beat Silver in Cherrygrove City. Falkner defeated, Zephyr Badge obtained. Defeated Sage Li of Sprout Tower.

Current Team: Alligator (Totodile), DinosaurII (Charmander), Glutton II (Snorlax), MagicianII (Abra), Shrew II (Sandshrew), Egg.

I went up to Route 23. On the way there, Blue challenged me to one more battle before we head off to the League. I handily beat him. Then I caught a Nidorina that I named Queen.

Now begins the final grind: my final level cap is 62 (the level of Lance's Dragonite), and my Pokémon are currently level 50 to 55, so there's some grinding to do. Route 23 should be a pretty good spot to get most of the way there, and then I'll do a bit more on my way through Victory Road, and polish off anything remaining after I reach the League.

Oh no! A wild Primeape on Route 23 took out my Mouse with a Thrash! I will have to train up Dragon to replace them. While training on Route 17, Dragon evolved to a Dragonair. After a lot more training my last few Pokémon, including Dragon (now a Dragonite), reached level 60, and I was ready for Victory Road. After some bag cleanup, I encountered a Geodude on Victory Road. Unfortunately it self-destructed and I could not catch it.

After training all my Pokémon to level 62 and stocking up on Full Restores, I'm ready to face the Elite Four. Here's my team:

  • Carp (Gyarados): Surf/Thunderbolt/Hyper Beam/Hydro Pump.
  • Magician (Alakazam): Psychic/Toxic/Recover/Flash.
  • Dinosaur (Charizard): Flamethrower/Slash/Fly/Earthquake.
  • Glutton (Snorlax): Hyper Beam/Rest/Amnesia/Blizzard.
  • Dragon (Dragonite): Surf/Hyper Beam/Wrap/Agility.
  • Shrew (Sandslash): Slash/Strength/Cut/Dig.

Against Lorelei, Carp's Thunderbolt handily disposes of Dewgong, Cloyster, and Slowbro, although it takes two for Dewgong (Lorelei uses a Super Potion but it doesn't help). Jynx freezes Dinosaur solid with an Ice Punch, so I have to deploy Glutton to take care of her. I try to switch to Carp, but Lapras paralyzes her with a Body Slam and between that and Confuse Ray, I need to switch back to Glutton again. Glutton finishes off Lorelei, but has used 4 of 5 Hyper Beams. I do have some Ethers and Elixers, but I'd rather not need them, you know.

Bruno goes down to Magician's Psychic without getting to take a single action. Good job Magician.

Against Agatha, Magician handles her first Gengar, her Golbat, and her Haunter. I switch in Shrew to give them a chance to play and take out Arbok, but her final Gengar hits Shrew with a Hypnosis and I have to rely on Magician to finish her off.

Against Lance, Dragon handles Gyarados, although she takes two Dragon Rages (one to use Agility and another after a missed Wrap. I accidentally use a Hyper Beam (that misses) versus his first Dragonair and get paralyzed, so it's time for Glutton to shine. I set up two Amnesias and then 1HKO everything with Blizzards. No misses, but I do take a Swift from Aerodactyl and a Hyper Beam from Dragonite. I still come out of it with 104 HP left.

Before facing Blue, I rare candied Carp, Dragon, Glutton, and Shrew to 64 with my 8 rare candies... Well, I would have except I accidentally used one on Dinosaur, so Shrew had to settle for 63. I also topped up Hyper Beam and Blizzard PP for Dragon and Glutton. Now for my defining battle! Will I emerge the Champion of the Pokémon League or be defeated at last?

A turn one poison on Dragon from Sandslash meant I can't rely on Wrap, but I did take out Sandslash and Alakazam with Hyper Beams. Exeggutor is a bit too bulky to Hyper Beam down, so after a Full Restore made my first Hyper Beam pointless, I switch to Dinosaur. I had to Poké Flute away a Hypnosis, but a couple of Flamethrowers took care of that. A Thunderbolt and Surf from Carp deals with Cloyster and Ninetales. I switch in Shrew on a missed Pin Missile from Jolteon. I accidentally use Strength which gets healed away by a Full Restore, but now I correctly Dig and it takes Jolteon out in a single hit.

Professor Oak shows up and enters me into the Hall of Fame! I did it! I think this is probably my first completed Nuzlocke? I've never wiped in one, but I have a lottt that I kinda dropped due to getting distracted (in one case, demoralized by a lost Gabite) hehe. (My playtime is somewhat exaggerated due to my usage of the fast forward feature of mgba). Here are Hall of Fame screenshots (I accidentally screenshot before the "Hall of Fame" message appeared for Carp and Magician):

Alice entered the Hall of Fame after 255 hours and 59 minutes play time, with ¥154,140 of money. Her Pokédex has 129 Pokémon seen and 45 owned. A Dragonite named Dragon: level 64. Dragon/Flying Type. A Gyarados named Carp: level 64. Water/Flying Type. A Charizard named Dinosaur: level 63. Fire/Flying Type. A Snorlax named Glutton: level 64. Normal Type. An Alakazam named Magician: level 63. Psychic Type. A Sandslash named Shrew: level 63. Ground Type.

I may go ahead and treat this as the start of a Genlocke (short for Generation(s) Locke), which is where you nuzlocke each generation in turn, carrying over your surviving Hall of Fame team from each game as eggs to the next. If so, I'll do Crystal next.

Summary

New Pokémon: Queen (Nidorina).

Evolutions: Dragon (Dragonair, Dragonite).

Losses: Mouse, at the hands of a wild Primeape's Thrash on route 23.

Important battles: Defeated Blue one last time before Victory Road. Defeated Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, Lance. Defeated Blue again, one last time for real! I am the Champion!

Final Team: Carp (Gyarados), Dinosaur (Charizard), Dragon (Dragonite), Glutton (Snorlax), Magician (Alakazam), Shrew (Sandslash).

After a bit of a delay because I accidentally reset without having saved since before Koga... so I had to redo both of those gyms (they went basically the same), I visited the Safari Zone and obtained HM03 and HM04 (Surf and Strength). I also caught a Dratini fishing in the Safari Zone that I named Dragon. I don't know whether I'll use them or not.

Now I'm gonna surf for Cinnabar Island! On Route 19, I caught Jellyfish the Tentacool, and on Route 20 Starfish the Staryu.

On Cinnabar, I visited the ruined Pokémon Mansion, where I caught a Ditto that I named Blob. There, I found a key to the Cinnabar Gym. Then Carp took care of Blaine, no problem.

I return to Viridian City, which now has a Gym Leader again, though it remains a mystery who that might be. After getting through the gym's trainers, it turns out to be Giovanni! Leader of Team Rocket! Hiding out here planning to get back to his schemes! But I defeat him again (thanks to Carp and Shrew). I think he might be done causing trouble for now... It's time for me to head toward the Pokémon League! In the next chapter, anyway.

Summary

New Pokémon: Dragon (Dratini), Jellyfish (Tentacool), Starfish (Staryu), Blob (Ditto).

Important battles: Blaine defeated, Volcano Badge obtained. Giovanni defeated at his gym, all eight badges earned!

Important items: HM03, HM04.

I think I may replace Frog in my team with Glutton. Frog just doesn't have a great match-up against anything beside Blue's Sandslash and Giovanni's Dugtrio for the rest of the game, and Glutton can bring some great bulk and Amnesia + TMed coverage moves and deal with multiple Elite Four members by herself.

I headed for the Cycling Road to head toward Fuchsia City. I caught a Ponyta that I named Horse on the Route 17 part. I battled a bunch of bikers and made it to Fuchsia City. Somebody gave me a Good Rod. I fished up a Goldeen that I called Goldfish. Back on Route 18 I met a Doduo, but I hit it a bit too hard and it fainted. I headed east from Fuchsia for some more experience. On Route 15, I saw an Oddish, but unfortunately I got a critical and it fainted. Embarrassingly, this exact thing happened again on Route 14. I got a Super Rod on Route 12. I visited Vermillion City again and fished up a Poliwag named Tadpole.

Anyway, now to settle in for the slow process of leveling up enough to take on Koga and Sabrina. The jump in levels between Erika (levels 30, 32, 32) and Koga (42, 46, 48, 50)/Sabrina (50×3) is pretty huge. There is a lot of stuff to do outside of gym battles between them (foiling Team Rocket twice, several routes worth of trainer battles), but even all of that stuff will maybe get your team to the low 40s if you're training a full six Pokémon, so there's some grinding to be done if you want to face the next gyms without a level disadvantage.

After training Magician to level 50 and the others to level 49 (just in case), I took on Koga. Magician took care of him. Now for a little bit of final training before Sabrina. Sabrina was a bit tougher for Carp; her Alakazam did some damage.

Summary

New Pokémon: Horse (Ponyta), Goldfish (Goldeen), Tadpole (Poliwag).

Important battles: Koga defeated, Soul Badge obtained. Sabrina defeated, Marsh Badge obtained.

Important items: Good Rod, Super Rod.

With the Lightning American out of the way, I've got the Thunderbolt TM, which is exciting, but I'll save it for when I really need it. I think I will go ahead and teach Carp Bubble Beam, though. Sure, eventually I'll teach them Surf, but in the meantime they won't get a Water-type move until level 41. I headed up to Cerulean to head east, and caught a Nidoran♂ named King on Route 9. I won't use them for now, but may reconsider later on when I can teach it Earthquake. I saw a Geodude in the Rock Tunnel, but Magician kinda took it out too fast, oops. I moved on to Celadon City via the Underground Path. I caught a Jigglypuff on Route 7 and named her Balloon. In Celadon, I found an Eevee that I named Aguara.

Erika was a bit of a challenge (not least because I accidentally led with Magician, who couldn't easily deal with her Tangela), but we defeated her with no losses. Dinosaur did drop to around 2 HP, though. Afterwards, I snuck into some kind of secret Team Rocket base underneath the Game Corner and battled Giovanni, their leader. He gave me the Silph Scope. Now I can probably go to the Pokémon Tower properly.

I visited the Pokémon Tower, and Blue insisted on battling me there. He's starting to diversify his team a bit, with a Shellder and a Vulpix, but he's not training enough; my Pokémon are all higher level than his. I caught a Gastly here that I named Ghost. Near the top I defeated a Marowak ghost and calmed it down to allow it to move on. On the top floor, I beat those two Team Rocket members again, and rescued Mr. Fuji, except apparently he didn't need rescuing and was just there to help calm the Marowak. He gave me the Poké Flute anyway, though.

At this point I decided to start a Blue save (with randomly selected Charmander, also named Dinosaur) in order to double-trade Magician to evolve them. Thank you, endrift, for making this possible! After that I visited Saffron City, where a psychic gave me the TM for Psychic. As usual I'm saving it for later. I think Magician will learn it on her own and I might want to teach it to somebody else too. None of the rest of my current team can actually learn it, but I might change my mind about who to use eventually. I also took on the Fighting Dojo and earned a Hitmonlee, whom I named Bruce.

Team Rocket took over Silph Co.! There sure are a lot of Team Rocket members here. Frog evolved into Venusaur! I didn't quite feel ready to take on the boss again, so I went and did some more leveling of my Pokémon elsewhere. Dinosaur also evolved into Charizard and I taught her Fly. Then I went and took on Blue (who I guess was hanging around there waiting because he wanted to battle me, the weirdo). His Pokémon are a lot stronger now, but I defeated him, and then those two Team Rocket members who keep showing up, and then Giovanni again. The head of Silph Co. gave me a Master Ball as a reward for saving them.

After that I went west of Celadon City and woke up a Snorlax with the Poké Flute and caught it. I named it Glutton. I might add it to my team, although I'm not sure what to substitute it in for.

At this point I swapped Dinosaur in in place of Rat to start training her up for later. On Route 25, I caught Moth, my Venonat. Unfortunately, I don't think I can fit her in my team. Dinosaur quickly evolved into a Charmeleon. I took care of a Team Rocket member who had stolen a Dig TM, but the owner didn't want it back. I'll probably teach it to Shrew eventually. On Route 5 I was lucky enough to catch an Abra! I named her Magician. Alas, Sparrow, you're making way for Magician for now.

Once I reach Vermillion City, I go back up to Route 6 and fish for a Pokémon with my brand new Old Rod. I catch a Magikarp, who I name Carp. There sure are a lot of trainers on the S.S. Anne. Magician evolved and learned to use Confusion. With Magician getting stronger I decided I was ready to start training Carp, so Butterfly rotated off my team. I battled Blue and Shrew evolved after defeating a few of his Pokémon. The captain gave me the HM for Cut, which I taught to Shrew.

I caught a Diglett, in the eponymous tunnel, that I named Mole, and a Drowzee on Route 11, Baku. I also picked up the HM for Flash on the other side of Diglett's Tunnel. Carp evolved into Gyarados. Once Shrew was level 28 and Frog was level 27, I challenged Lt. Surge. Shrew made easy work of his Raichu!

Summary

New Pokémon: Moth (Venonat), Magician (Abra), Carp (Magikarp), Mole (Diglett), Baku (Drowzee).

Evolutions: Dinosaur (Charmeleon), Magician (Kadabra), Shrew (Sandslash), Carp (Gyarados).

Route 3 was full of trainers, and I caught a Sandshrew at level 8, named Shrew. Time for Mt. Moon! I caught Bat, a level 6 Zubat.

Oh goodness! Mouse was dropped to a single hit point and poisoned by the Super Nerd's Koffing! I switch her out for Butterfly, who took care of Koffing. I used my Antidote on Mouse, so, phew. And then I took the Dome Fossil and he took the Helix Fossil. Some Team Rocket goons tried to take it from me on the way out of Mt. Moon but Shrew and Mouse took care of them.

In Cerulean City, someone gave me a Bulbasaur they had nursed back to health. I named her Frog and swapped her into my team in place of Pigeon. I went back to Route 4 for some leveling and caught a Mankey that I named Monkey. I don't think Monkey will make it onto my team, unfort. Frog evolved into an Ivysaur!

On the north side of Cerulean City, Blue challenged me to another battle. It was a bit scary; his Spearow hit four times with a Fury Attack and pretty seriously hurt Mouse, but we made it through. I battled some more trainers on the bridge. The last one gave me a Nugget but tried to recruit me to join Team Rocket. On Route 24 I captured a Bellsprout, that I named Tuber. A trainer there also gave me a Charmander that he wasn't capable of raising properly. I named her Dinosaur and she'll replace Rat in my team soon.

After a fair bit of leveling (Rat evolved too), I took on Misty. Turns out Mouse was strong enough to handle her all by itself! Bubble Beam TM will come in handy once I get something that can actually learn it. Now, I guess it's time to explore north of here more.

Summary

New Pokémon: Shrew (Sandshrew), Bat (Zubat), Monkey (Mankey), Frog (Bulbasaur→Ivysaur), Tuber (Bellsprout), Dinosaur (Charmander).

Evolutions: Frog (Ivysaur), Rat (Raticate).

Important battles: Team Rocket defeated in Mt. Moon. Blue defeated at Cerulean City. Misty defeated! Cascade Badge GET!

I'm at a relatively boring bit of my current fangame save, so I'm going to try a Nuzlocke of Pokémon Yellow. I think Yellow was my first Pokémon game as a child. Fun times. Due to gen 1 not having iron/copper (♂️/♀️) mons (other than the Nidorine lines), I'm not using the "Girl's Club" thing I usually do for funsies. Short version of my rules beyond basic "first encounter per area only/fainted mons are gone forever": Already caught mons don't count and shinies and gift pokémon can be caught and used regardless, and I can't exceed certain level caps.

Full disclosure: this is pretty much just gonna be describing things that happen in my run! I'll put a little status summary at the bottom to summarize the big events.

As is my habit in nuzlockes, I nickname mons after animals or other real-world things they are meant to resemble. Also I name my characters Alice. My Pikachu is named Mouse and phew I had to use a potion to make it through my first rival battle against Blue (his Eevee used Tail Whip six times and then crit his first Tackle!).

In Pokémon games I always grind my starter to level 8 in the first patch of grass before I go further into Route 1. Mostly I just want them at a safe level to complete that first proper trek through the route in one go, and honestly Pidgeys are always bizarrely strong. So my Pikachu gets to level 8 and learns Thunder Wave. Fancy.

The Pokémart in Viridian City apparently runs an unpaid delivery service by making random kids deliver stuff for them. Also jeez, Blue is a jerk, telling his sister to not give me a Town Map (not that she listens to him). I can buy Pokéballs now! Over at Route 22, I catch my level 4 Spearow, named Sparrow. On Route 1, I catch Pigeon, a level 5 Pidgey. And a level 4 Rattata named Rat on Route 2. I get everything but Rat to 9 (Rat I leave at 8) and take on Blue without any difficulty this time. In Viridian Forest, I catch a level 3 Caterpie and name her Butterfly.

After reaching Pewter City, I train my team up to level 12 and then take on Brock. Butterfly handles him easily! Good for her! She hits level 13 from the experience. ⁚⟩

Summary

New Pokémon: Mouse (Pikachu), Sparrow (Spearow), Pigeon (Pidgey), Rat (Rattata), Butterfly (Caterpie→Butterfree).

Important battles: Blue defeated twice. Brock defeated! Boulder Badge GET!

i haven't been on here because the computer on which i had the password was unable to charge for.... many months, and i could still read things without logging in so I didn't bother resolving the not-having-my-password on the machine i was using so. i may continue not posting but we'll see!

(the "me stuff" note is to give people uninterested in me rambling about my self and experiences as such the opportunity to skip this)

Something i've struggled with in the past when i wanted to listen to audiobooks or podcasts is that i have to focus a lot of my attention on it to get anything at all out of it, but not all of it. It's plausibly the case that it's all of my like, verbal processing attention but it might not be quite all of that either. So, because of how much attention they require for me, i can't read something or even skim through a social media feed simultaneously. Even IMing someone is quite a stretch. If i try, i manage to do the other thing but i manage to parse basically zero of the audiobook/podcast/whatever.

On the other hand, it's not really enough to occupy all of my attention, either. So, when i tried to just listen to an audiobook or just listen to a podcast, i tended to get restless and have a hard time sitting through even like a 20 minute podcast episode. This Did Not Work Out. But most of the ways i normally occupy my time use up too much of the same kinds of attention to work simultaneously.

A long time of thinking podcasts were impossible for me later, one of my fav authors ([tumblr.com profile] ink-splotch) was hired to join the writing team for some science-fiction podcast i'd never heard of (The Strange Case of Starship Iris), and i decided to try the first episode. Andddddd it was really engaging, so i kinda needed to figure out a way to occupy the rest of my mind enough to keep me from getting restless listening...

What i decided to try was: playing somewhat tedious but very low-attention neopets games (mostly sakhmet solitaire, neggsweeper, and neoquest) or idle games (fidgeting with something in my hands also can work, but i don't really have good fidget toys), and both of those worked out quite well. Having that extra bit to occupy part of me actually helps me to keep from getting restless or distracted. As a perk, between the game or whatever and the audiobook, i'm actually occupied enough that my mind doesn't wander and get into unpleasant emotional spirals usually (some other bad mental health stuff can slip through but even that seems to be alleviated at least a little)!

Regarding that perk, however, i've been reading text more the last few weeks instead of constantly listening to fiction podcasts most of my waking hours, and i'm remembering that that is much less compatible with simultaneously playing games or such but also still leaves enough of my mind free to wander and interfere with my focus. Getting distracted in the middle of reading is less inconvenient than getting distracted in the middle of listening, at least, since the book or whatever doesn't move on past things i missed when i'm not paying attention. I wonder if i can find something to fidget with or something that would have similar attention-preserving benefits for me while reading as it or games do for listening.

Some things I've liked recently:

  • behind sigil's doors: a leonardo de montreal fanmix that [personal profile] caramelchameleon did for a hurt/comfort bingo thing (also reading/listening/etc. their leonardo stuff more generally is really making that boy dear to my heart)
  • Xeno: Letters from Hoenn by [archiveofourown.org profile] sophiecognito, an epistolary fic about a young lesbian(?) reluctantly transplanted from Johto to Hoenn going on a Pokémon-training journey in her gap year between high school and college. There's a lot of really fun interactions between her and her mon, as well as some people she meets along the way. there's some of that that-ex-that-just-destroys-you-whenever-you-have-the-misfortune-to-stumble-across-or-be-forced-to-think-of-them, which, i can relate, Laurel, igi. (additional content warnings for mon death, rough financial situations, strained family situations (mostly just, like, awkward and distant rather than anything more intense)) (oh, also i'm unfortunately not sure how screen-reader-friendly it is, since some of it is screenshots of text messages which might or might not have text alternatives)
  • she-ra and the princesses of power s1! i watched it with my fiancée and we liked it a bunch very light spoilers )
  • the strange case of starship iris. wlw? ☑️ aliens who don't get human gender structures? ☑️ trans people? ☑️ very charming space smugglers? ☑️ horrible repressive governments and the folks who oppose them? ☑️ idk i just love this a lot and it basically started me on listening to podcasts again
  • season 1 of the penumbra podcast. another science-fiction (mostly) podcast, this time mostly noir-y and with significantly less aliens and gender (as in, significantly less remaining of contemporary gender systems) and significantly more mlm and planetary events. similar amounts of aliases and shit going wrong

because of late i am quite obsessed with Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine and my partners, while intrigued by my talking about it, haven't really had the time/executive function to read the books, i ended up deciding to run a game for them set in a familiar fictional setting so there'd be one fewer thing to learn about for them.

we settled upon little witch academia as our choice of work to steal our setting from, which meant that i also needed to figure out how the magic should be implemented mechanically. so, after rewatching a number of episodes of the TV anime and reading many articles on the lwa wikia, i constructed a list of standard techniques for a Witchcraft Magical Skill, and some characters with particularly specialized magics will also have other Magical Skills for their specialized magics (of course, other witches could potentially use their Witchcraft skill to do Confectionery Charms, for example, techniques at an appropriately increased obstacle, as usual)

here are the list of standardized techniques for the Witchcraft skill that we're using:

  • [Obstacle 0]: create a small magical light at the tip of your wand
  • [Obstacle 0]: fly with the aid of a broom
  • [Obstacle 0]: levitate or move small objects around
  • [Obstacle 1]: transform a person or creature into an animal or an object into other objects
  • [Obstacle 1]: repair small or simple objects that are broken
  • [Obstacle 1]: conjure small or simple objects
  • [Obstacle 2]: repair large or complicated broken objects
  • [Obstacle 2]: protect yourself and others with a magical energy shield
  • [Obstacle 2]: slow or briefly rewind the passage of time for some inanimate objects
  • [Obstacle 2]: blast someone or something with magical, possibly elemental, energy
  • [Obstacle 3]: animate statues or other large objects to do as you command
  • [Obstacle 3]: enter the inner spiritual realm of an unconscious witch
  • [Obstacle 3]: together with one or more other witches, nullify a magic

The Obstacle 0-1 techniques are mostly based on spells that Akko learned or was expected to learn in the early episodes of the TV anime. The higher difficulty ones are ones that we mostly see performed by more skilled and powerful witches like Diana or teachers at Luna Nova (or in some cases less powerful witches with the help of particularly complicated rituals or magical items).

There's a lot of magic in the show that gets used by like, Diana or Ursula or Croix or another teacher that isn't included here but might make sense to include as standardized techniques in a game in the setting where the characters are mostly teachers or otherwise adult witches, but I felt like it didn't make much sense to do so for our game. Of course, our characters could still potentially do these things, but it would take a heavier Obstacle and, as the CMWGE book puts it "experimentation, practice, or inspiration" for them to do so.
