    1. Losing a battle is game over.

    1. Gift clause: Gift Pokémon do not count as an encounter.
    2. Dupes clause: If an encounter is a Pokémon of a species that was already captured, it does not count.
    3. Intentionally abusing 3.2 to control what mons you get is cheesy and therefore impermissible as a vegan.
    4. Girl’s Club: ♂️ Pokémon don’t count either. (this rule is omitted because only two Pokémon have planetary alignments in Yellow.
    5. Shinies can always be caught and used.
    6. Wild Pokémon encountered before it is possible to catch any Pokémon do not count as your first encounter in an area.
  4. Level caps:
    1. Pokémon that exceed the level of the next Gym Leader's ace Pokémon as of the start of the battle cannot be used in trainer battles.
    2. The Elite Four may not be entered with Pokémon whose level exceeds that of the final Elite Four member's ace.

  5. Set Mode must be used.

At this point I swapped Dinosaur in in place of Rat to start training her up for later. On Route 25, I caught Moth, my Venonat. Unfortunately, I don't think I can fit her in my team. Dinosaur quickly evolved into a Charmeleon. I took care of a Team Rocket member who had stolen a Dig TM, but the owner didn't want it back. I'll probably teach it to Shrew eventually. On Route 5 I was lucky enough to catch an Abra! I named her Magician. Alas, Sparrow, you're making way for Magician for now.

Once I reach Vermillion City, I go back up to Route 6 and fish for a Pokémon with my brand new Old Rod. I catch a Magikarp, who I name Carp. There sure are a lot of trainers on the S.S. Anne. Magician evolved and learned to use Confusion. With Magician getting stronger I decided I was ready to start training Carp, so Butterfly rotated off my team. I battled Blue and Shrew evolved after defeating a few of his Pokémon. The captain gave me the HM for Cut, which I taught to Shrew.

I caught a Diglett, in the eponymous tunnel, that I named Mole, and a Drowzee on Route 11, Baku. I also picked up the HM for Flash on the other side of Diglett's Tunnel. Carp evolved into Gyarados. Once Shrew was level 28 and Frog was level 27, I challenged Lt. Surge. Shrew made easy work of his Raichu!
