rules for my Yellow Nuzlocke
- All Pokémon must be nicknamed.
- If a Pokémon is defeated in battle it may not be used for the rest of the game.
- Losing a battle is game over.
- Only the first wild Pokémon encountered in an area may be captured and used.
- Gift clause: Gift Pokémon do not count as an encounter.
- Dupes clause: If an encounter is a Pokémon of a species that was already captured, it does not count.
- Intentionally abusing 3.2 to control what mons you get is cheesy and therefore impermissible as a vegan.
Girl’s Club: ♂️ Pokémon don’t count either.(this rule is omitted because only two Pokémon have planetary alignments in Yellow.- Shinies can always be caught and used.
- Wild Pokémon encountered before it is possible to catch any Pokémon do not count as your first encounter in an area.
- Level caps:
- Pokémon that exceed the level of the next Gym Leader's ace Pokémon as of the start of the battle cannot be used in trainer battles.
- The Elite Four may not be entered with Pokémon whose level exceeds that of the final Elite Four member's ace.
- It is permissible to use Rare Candies before battling the Champion as long as no Pokémon exceed the level of the Champion's ace.
- Set Mode must be used.
I went up to Route 23. On the way there, Blue challenged me to one more battle before we head off to the League. I handily beat him. Then I caught a Nidorina that I named Queen.
Now begins the final grind: my final level cap is 62 (the level of Lance's Dragonite), and my Pokémon are currently level 50 to 55, so there's some grinding to do. Route 23 should be a pretty good spot to get most of the way there, and then I'll do a bit more on my way through Victory Road, and polish off anything remaining after I reach the League.
Oh no! A wild Primeape on Route 23 took out my Mouse with a Thrash! I will have to train up Dragon to replace them. While training on Route 17, Dragon evolved to a Dragonair. After a lot more training my last few Pokémon, including Dragon (now a Dragonite), reached level 60, and I was ready for Victory Road. After some bag cleanup, I encountered a Geodude on Victory Road. Unfortunately it self-destructed and I could not catch it.
After training all my Pokémon to level 62 and stocking up on Full Restores, I'm ready to face the Elite Four. Here's my team:
- Carp (Gyarados): Surf/Thunderbolt/Hyper Beam/Hydro Pump.
- Magician (Alakazam): Psychic/Toxic/Recover/Flash.
- Dinosaur (Charizard): Flamethrower/Slash/Fly/Earthquake.
- Glutton (Snorlax): Hyper Beam/Rest/Amnesia/Blizzard.
- Dragon (Dragonite): Surf/Hyper Beam/Wrap/Agility.
- Shrew (Sandslash): Slash/Strength/Cut/Dig.
Against Lorelei, Carp's Thunderbolt handily disposes of Dewgong, Cloyster, and Slowbro, although it takes two for Dewgong (Lorelei uses a Super Potion but it doesn't help). Jynx freezes Dinosaur solid with an Ice Punch, so I have to deploy Glutton to take care of her. I try to switch to Carp, but Lapras paralyzes her with a Body Slam and between that and Confuse Ray, I need to switch back to Glutton again. Glutton finishes off Lorelei, but has used 4 of 5 Hyper Beams. I do have some Ethers and Elixers, but I'd rather not need them, you know.
Bruno goes down to Magician's Psychic without getting to take a single action. Good job Magician.
Against Agatha, Magician handles her first Gengar, her Golbat, and her Haunter. I switch in Shrew to give them a chance to play and take out Arbok, but her final Gengar hits Shrew with a Hypnosis and I have to rely on Magician to finish her off.
Against Lance, Dragon handles Gyarados, although she takes two Dragon Rages (one to use Agility and another after a missed Wrap. I accidentally use a Hyper Beam (that misses) versus his first Dragonair and get paralyzed, so it's time for Glutton to shine. I set up two Amnesias and then 1HKO everything with Blizzards. No misses, but I do take a Swift from Aerodactyl and a Hyper Beam from Dragonite. I still come out of it with 104 HP left.
Before facing Blue, I rare candied Carp, Dragon, Glutton, and Shrew to 64 with my 8 rare candies... Well, I would have except I accidentally used one on Dinosaur, so Shrew had to settle for 63. I also topped up Hyper Beam and Blizzard PP for Dragon and Glutton. Now for my defining battle! Will I emerge the Champion of the Pokémon League or be defeated at last?
A turn one poison on Dragon from Sandslash meant I can't rely on Wrap, but I did take out Sandslash and Alakazam with Hyper Beams. Exeggutor is a bit too bulky to Hyper Beam down, so after a Full Restore made my first Hyper Beam pointless, I switch to Dinosaur. I had to Poké Flute away a Hypnosis, but a couple of Flamethrowers took care of that. A Thunderbolt and Surf from Carp deals with Cloyster and Ninetales. I switch in Shrew on a missed Pin Missile from Jolteon. I accidentally use Strength which gets healed away by a Full Restore, but now I correctly Dig and it takes Jolteon out in a single hit.
Professor Oak shows up and enters me into the Hall of Fame! I did it! I think this is probably my first completed Nuzlocke? I've never wiped in one, but I have a lottt that I kinda dropped due to getting distracted (in one case, demoralized by a lost Gabite) hehe. (My playtime is somewhat exaggerated due to my usage of the fast forward feature of mgba). Here are Hall of Fame screenshots (I accidentally screenshot before the "Hall of Fame" message appeared for Carp and Magician):

I may go ahead and treat this as the start of a Genlocke (short for Generation(s) Locke), which is where you nuzlocke each generation in turn, carrying over your surviving Hall of Fame team from each game as eggs to the next. If so, I'll do Crystal next.
