PKMN Crystal Nuzlocke ch. 1
I'm going to transition my PKMN Yellow Nuzlocke into a Genlocke, where I take the survivors of the League in each game on to a game from the next generation as eggs). So, Crystal's up next! The rules are changing slightly: I'm adding my usual "Girl's Club" rule back in and a randomized starter rule as well (not applicable to Yellow since there's not a choice of starter in that one).
rules for my Genlocke, Crystal section
- All Pokémon must be nicknamed.
- If a Pokémon is defeated in battle it may not be used for the rest of the game.
- Losing a battle is game over.
- Only the first wild Pokémon encountered in an area may be captured and used.
- Gift clause: Gift Pokémon do not count as an encounter.
- Dupes clause: If an encounter is a Pokémon of a species that was already captured, it does not count.
- Intentionally abusing 3.2 to control what mons you get is cheesy and therefore impermissible as a vegan.
- Girl’s Club: ♂️ Pokémon don’t count either. (It is permissible to soft reset for a ♀️ gift/static Pokémon.)
- Shinies can always be caught and used.
- Wild Pokémon encountered before it is possible to catch any Pokémon do not count as your first encounter in an area.
- The champion Pokémon may optionally have moves deleted first (to avoid silliness like starting the game with Surf), but may not be taught new moves that will be passed down to the baby Pokémon.
- When applicable, Incense may be used or not used at the player's preference.
- The legacy Pokémon do not have to be used, but can be.
- Level caps:
- Pokémon that exceed the level of the next Gym Leader's ace Pokémon as of the start of the battle cannot be used in trainer battles.
- The Elite Four may not be entered with Pokémon whose level exceeds that of the final Elite Four member's ace.
- It is permissible to use Rare Candies before battling the Champion as long as no Pokémon exceed the level of the Champion's ace.
Amusingly, despite adding in the random starter rule, my trainer ID is 54800... so I get a free choice this time. Normally I'd pick Cyndaquil, but I do get Charmander as a legacy mon. Totodile is my next favorite Johto starter, although I will eventually get Carp's child to be Gyarados again. I think I'll do Totodile though. It took me like 6 or more times to get a copper Totodile.
I head through Cherrygrove City Professor Elm's request to get to Mr. Pokémon's House on Route 30. Mr. Pokémon gives me a Mystery Egg to bring to Professor Elm, while Professor Oak gives me a Pokédex! On my way back, some red-headed kid shows up and challenges me to a battle, that I win. While I'm going back and forth, my legacy Pokémon eggs start hatching! Back home, Elm advises me to go earn Gym Badges, and his assistant gives me some Poké Balls.
On Route 29, I meet a Hoothoot, but a stray critical KOs it. Oops. On Route 30 the next morning, I do catch a Caterpie that I name Butterfly. They might briefly replace Dragon II or somebody in my party, but not yet, since the level cap for Falkner is only 9 so I can't even get Butterfree yet. On Route 31, I catch a Ledyba that I name Ladybug. I made it to Violet City to heal up and then dipped into Dark Cave, where I captured a Geodude that I named Rock. In Sprout Tower, I catch a Rattata named Rat.
Falkner was super easy with my legacy Pokémon, although Magician II didn't 1HKO Pidgeotto and would have been eliminated if Gust had been a critical. I'll have to be more careful with it for a while. Afterwards, Professor Elm called me and asked me to meet his assistant at the Pokémon Center. He gives me the Egg to hatch, so I put Dragon II in the box for now. Afterwards I go and finish off the Sprout Tower and receive HM05 Flash.
Next time I'll be on my way to Azalea Town! Thus far I'm mostly making use of my legacy Pokémon, but we'll see what happens as time goes on. I certainly plan to level up Butterfly for early-game catching purposes.
